conversational voice assistant for prt bus services

while studying at cmu, local buses were the main method of traveling around the city available for students. the buses are convenient and the routes cover almost all of pittsburgh, but the schedules are very volatile and often students miss crowded buses while in a hurry to get to class.

the team experienced this many times first hand and decided to work on a conversational assistant that would help pittsburgh citizens to experience a more convenient way of planning and traveling around the city

to visualize an ideal journey, i sketched out a scenario which would reflect the experience that we wanted to impart to the users.

vui voice considerations

the challenge while creating the perfect conversational assistant was creating a personality that people could trust and depend on; but did not sound grave and too serious. we kept in mind 3 keywords while creating the persona.

graphic user interface design

the ui design for ollie started with identifying colors and a defining design language. we created a ui library to formalize ui designs across the mobile and kiosk interfaces. we chose to keep the yellow and blue from the new branding, tweaking the colors slightly to accommodate for a darker text and supportive lighter tints. we chose manrope as the primary typeface as it closely resembled the prt typeface.

Mask groupMask groupMask group
motion design

a large part of ollie’s personality was the motion and logo. we redesigned the prt logo to create a more personable composition. this process involved multiple iterations and the final form was tweaked multiple times before we started animating.

while animating the different states, we tried to think of ollie as a person and incorporated human-like gestures to further enhance the conversational aspect of the interface. the motion states were animated in after effects.
